A fundamental problem is structuring materials of multiple components in nanoscopic,mesoscopic, and macroscopic length scales to optimize electrochemical kinetics,mass-transfer, and charge transfer processes. We report recent syntheses of 1)mixed metal/metal oxide nanoparticles with control size and composition, 2)mesoporous carbon supports, 3) structuring macropores and core-shell mesoporous structures; and show their applications in fuel cell electrodes, super-capacitors, and catalytic hydrogen generation. The metals/oxides will include Pt-Ru, Pt-WO3, and Pt-TiO2. The mesoporous carbons include CMK-3,CMK-8, and other carbons template-synthesized from ordered mesoporous silicas. The use of a platinum based nano-catalyst in indirect formic fuel cell willalso be introduced.
