Development of New Laser Techniques for Diagnostic Challenges in Combustion Research

Laser diagnostic techniques have for more than thirty years added very valuable input for a deepened understanding of combustion processes. Although substantial progress in laser-based combustion diagnostics during this period, a number of difficult challenges remain, especially for diagnostics in practical combustion devices. The present talk will focus on a few major challenges; namely limited optical access, large probe volumes, excessive scattering and stray light, quantification of species concentrations from laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), and detection of “new” species. A number of novel techniques will be presented to address these challenges: ps-LIDAR, fluorescence life-time imaging and photofragmentation laser-induced fluorescence.

Dr. Joakim Bood

Dr.Bood is associate professor at Division of Combustion Physics, Lund University, Sweden. His research area focused on laser-based technology development for combustion diagnostic, in particular picosecond spectroscopy techniques, e.g. ps-LIF, ps-Raman and ps-LIDAR etc.

Dr.Bood received his MSc in Engineering Physics from Lund University in 1995. He received his PhD in combustion physics in 2000, working with Prof. Per-Erik Bengtsson on development and application of rotational CARS for combustion diagnostics. From 2001 to 2004 he was a postdoctoral fellow at Sandia National Laboratories, California, USA, working with Dr. David Osborn and Dr. Andy McIlroy on development of NICE-OHMS for ultrasensitive spectroscopy of combustion radicals. Since 2004 he has been a researcher and teacher at the Div. of Combustion Physics at Lund University, where he has established a research program focused on picosecond spectroscopy and applied molecular spectroscopy.

Development of New Laser Techniques for Diagnostic Challenges in Combustion Research

Dr. Joakim Bood
