主题: China and the methanol EconomyTM 报告人: Professor George A. Olah, Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute,University of Southern California, USA 时间: 2007.8.2,9:00am 地点:玉泉校区永谦学生活动中心 学术报告内容简介: Worldwide diminishing oil and gas reserves and growing demand for energy, fuels and essential hydrocarbon products put renewed emphasis on still available coal reserves. Combustion of any fossil fuel inevitably generates carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas, contributing significantly to global warming. We have, in recent years, developed a new approach called the Methanol EconomyTM to provide ways beyond oil and natural gas to satisfy humankind’s hydrocarbon needs, while also solving related environmental problems. Methanol presently produced from natural gas or coal based syn-gas can also be made by direct oxidative conversion of natural gas or other methane sources. Significantly, our new approach chemically recycles excess carbon dioxide formed from human activities, natural, and industrial sources, or even from the air to methanol via capture that is followed by reductive conversion, primarily by hydrogen. Any available energy source (preferably alternative and atomic energy) can provide the needed energy, to generate hydrogen. Methanol and derived dimethyl ether are preferable to hydrogen for energy storage and transportation. Methanol is also an excellent fuel for heat engines and fuel cells and is a convenient raw material for synthetic hydrocarbons and their varied products. 报告人简介: George A. Olah, PhD, was born 1927 in Budapest Hungary. He obtained his doctoral degree at the Technical University of Budapest. In 1956, Olah left Hungary and moved to the US, where he and his coworkers discovered carbocation and hydrocarbon chemistry in superacids. For his discoveries, he was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Loker Hydrocarbon Institute at the University of Southern California. He has published more than 1300 scientific papers and authored or edited 15 books. He holds more than 120 patents. His current research interests are in the hydrocarbon chemistry and energy areas covering various aspects of methanol economy. He has received innumerable awards and accolades, including the 2005 Priestley Medal from the American Chemical Society. 2007.7.2
